our story

"Martyn gave me the gift of silence, and in doing so, unlocked a magical world of sound,"  aldous Heaf

Little Listens Shorts, a beautifully immersive children’s audio series, was born from the imagination of 15-year-old Aldous Heaf, whose deep love for nature was ignited during two extraordinary days with his great uncle, renowned sound recordist Martyn Stewart. Inspired by their time together capturing the sounds of the wild and by an award-winning essay he wrote at just 14, Aldous - along with his mother Amanda Hill and Martyn - crafted Little Listens to transport young listeners into the heart of nature through the magic of sound.

At its core, Little Listens is about learning to listen—not just to nature, but to the quiet stories unfolding around us. With real environmental soundscapes, gentle storytelling, and an invitation to slow down and notice the world, each episode is designed for curious young minds to explore the rhythms of the earth, from the whale’s breath breaking the stillness of the ocean to the soft wingbeats of a bird soaring on the wind.

The inspiration behind Little Listens began on a Florida shoreline, where Aldous and Martyn sat together, surrounded by the hush of dawn and the rising chorus of life. That moment of deep listening—first to the waves, then the wind, then the hidden layers of sound beneath them—became the foundation for Little Listens. It was later captured in Aldous' evocative essay, The Art of Silence, which went on to win joint first place in the 2023 Rachel Carson Essay Competition.

"Martyn gave me the gift of silence, and in doing so, unlocked a magical world of sound," Aldous wrote in his essay. That gift is now being passed on to children everywhere, inviting them to close their eyes, breathe in, and discover the wonders of nature through their ears.

Whether listening to the haunting call of a loon on a misty lake, the distant hum of bees weaving through a wildflower meadow, or the rhythmic drumming of rain on the forest floor, Little Listens brings nature’s quiet symphonies to young ears, encouraging mindfulness, curiosity, and a deep connection to the planet.

As the youngest creator behind a global nature listening project, Aldous proves that age is no barrier to big ideas—especially when they’re born from the simple act of stopping to listen.

Little Listens is available now on all major podcast platforms.
