A Poem
Spreading Wings
for Martyn
Today was the day.
We’re off. We’re away.
I have food for my tummy. Courage for my heart.
Boots on my feet and a journey to start.
My bed is well made.
My toys are all set.
“I’m not leaving, just going. Still love me. Don’t forget”.
Tap Tap. Scratch scratch. Knock Tap. Knock Knock.
A little bird? Pecking? At the window and the lock.
“I have places to be.
A whole world yet to see.
No time. Not for talking or stalling and pause.
I head to the sun, to the wild, to the shores.
To the lands where rain dances, nature sings and winds rage,
Where life is all living and free from its cage.
Where love is abundant
Where no one’s alone
Just for feeling different
And where home is truly home”
***
Tap Tap. Scratch scratch. Knock Knock. “Don’t leave”
“Dear friend. Have you forgotten.. or just stopped knowing how to believe?”
But her tweet was a tweet and could barely be heard
A whisper. A feeling? Or just the chirp of a bird?
Then the sky ripped wide open and the flashes beamed bright
But the bird didn’t leave. Held firm. Sat tight.
The rain beat down and the clouds darkened the day
The bird bowed her head. Held even tighter and stayed.
“Little bird. Little bird. Come in from the storm”.
“Little bird. Little bird. Take my hand. Let’s get you warm”
“Little bird. Little bird. Have you something to say?”
Silence. Just a heartbeat. I paused and I prayed.
***
The day grew old. The nights come and go.
A few days pass and the bird starts to show..
A new sense of life.. as she finally takes flight
Soars up to the sky. So small and out of sight.
I felt an ache in my heart. “Don’t leave me. I cry”
My lip trembles. I crumble. “I’m here”, she replies.
***
“I’ve sang to you every morning to set you up for your day”
“I sing to you at night as you kneel down to pray”
“I fly alongside you. Sometimes high. Sometimes low”
Just so you sense me… that feeling, you know?”
To never feel alone, but to also want to be free,
To feel safe and close and yet have the courage to be…
***
Dear friend, you’ve never, ever once been alone.
You just stopped knowing it sadly, the more that you’ve grown..
We saw it coming….the tree and i.
The squirrel told us not to fret..
But the fox said ‘why?..
Not just reach out a hand and see if you’d still see..
What has always been there between ‘us’ and ‘we’.
***
The world crowds love out, but if you listen, you’ll still hear
Our heartbeat is ‘one’ and there is nothing to fear
If you just keep it beating, keep believing and care..
Knowing right on your doorstep is the where to your ‘where?”
You’ll embark on great adventures
You’ll see worlds and wild shores..
But life is also right with you…and this love is all yours.

LITTLE LISTENS PODCAST SERIES
LITTLE LISTENS SHORT STORIES
COMING SOON
Little Listens STORIES is a collection of immersive, lyrical tales that bring the natural world to life for young listeners. Each story follows a small but determined character - whether a bird searching for its song, a tree listening to the whispers of the forest, or a bee learning to dance. Through their journeys, children discover the beauty of connection, resilience, and the rhythms of nature.
Set in stunning ecosystems across the globe - from the golden forests of Australia to the moonlit shores of Costa Rica - these stories celebrate the voices of the wild and the wisdom hidden in the natural world.
Each tale is a love letter to the earth, blending gentle storytelling with themes of conservation, teamwork, and wonder. Can a single song save a species? Can a sapling restore the whispers of the woods? Can a tiny bat protect the night?
Little ears will listen. Little hearts will care. Because every voice - no matter how small - has a place in the great symphony of life.
